Fox Body Speakers
Upgrading your Fox Body’s sound system means you’ll likely be replacing the old Factory Fox Body speakers. Fox Bodies are 30 to 40 years old. In electronics terms, the factory sound systems are centuries old.
In this article we’ll guide you through replacing your Fox Body Mustang’s speakers. For the purpose of this article we’ll focus on 1987-1993 Mustangs. We’ve listed some of the most popular upgraded stereo components below. The information and recommended products below should cover your Fox Body in most cases. We’ve heard a story or two about some Fox Bodies having oddball components installed from the factory.
Dash Speakers
The 1987 thru 1996 Fox Bodies came with 3-1/2″ dash speakers. The factory units weren’t anything fancy. To remove the speaker grills use at T20 bit. Once the cover is removed, remove the speakers with a Philips screwdriver. We’ve listed some of the most popular replacement options below.
Front Door Speakers
The factory equipped 1987 thru 1993 Mustang doors with 5-1/2″ speakers. You’ll be able to replace the factory units with 5-1/2″ to 6-1/2″ speakers. You may have to drill new mounting holes depending on what speakers you choose. Take your time when removing speaker grills and door panels as the old plastic can easily break. The tools you need to perform the swap include: Phillips screwdriver, flat blade screwdriver, socket wrench, 10mm socket, and panel tool.
Rear Speakers
This is where things can get tricky. Speakers used on various body styles varied.
Coupes use 6″x 8″ speakers mounted under the rear deck. Removing the old speakers is as easy as removing the 4 Philips screws securing each speaker.
Hatchbacks also use 6″x 8″ speakers. To remove the old speakers remove the grill and the speaker using a Philips screwdriver. We’ve listed some of the most popular 6″x 8″ replacement speakers below.
Convertibles came with a variety of rear speaker sizes. Some came with 5-1/2″ speakers and some came with 6-1/2″ speakers. You’ll have to remove the interior side panel. Usually, the factory speakers were riveted in so you’ll have to drill those out using an 1/8″ drill bit. You should be able to install 6-1/2″ speakers but you may have to drill some new mounting holes. (see speaker options above)
