Fox Body Mustang 130 Amp Alternator Upgrade
Introduction
In preparation for installing an electric fan in the Fox Body Project, I did the ever popular 130 amp alternator upgrade. The factory alternators put out a wimpy 75 amps. Those alternators don’t produce near enough amperage to run high powered accessories like the air conditioner, stereo amplifiers and electric fans AND keep the battery charged. Even without the accessories on you could see the headlights and dash lights dim when stopping at stop lights.
130 Amp Fox Body Alternator Options
If you do a google search for “Fox Body 130 amp alternator upgrade”, you will find several good install tutorials and expensive parts options. Some articles recommend finding a suitable alternator from a junkyard. While that’s an option, you never really know what you’re going to get when you buy junkyard parts.
Better Alternative
In order to save a wad of cash, I opted for a new alternator I found on Amazon. This 130 amp alternator is intended for 1995 Mustangs but fits the Fox Bodies with a little work. The price was right and the reviews were good. This BRAND NEW alternator on Amazon is just $69 and has NO core charge. It’s much cheaper than the ones sold by online speed shops and local auto parts stores. You can save $60 to $100 by grabbing this one on Amazon. You could pick up a cheap junkyard 130 amp alternator for your Fox Body Mustang.
Staying Safe
Safety is always the top priority. Due to the higher amperage output it is highly recommended that you also upgrade to a 4 gauge power wire with circuit protection. I used the money I saved on the alternator to purchase a complete install kit that came with pre-cut 4 gauge power wire, 200 amp inline fuse, new connectors and hardware for completing the install.
You can also piece together a DIY kit using this amplifier installation kit and this wiring harness connector. If you need a fuse, this is a popular option.
Since the case on 130 amp alternators are slightly larger the install requires some clearancing of the factory alternator bracket. Not a tough job but you do need a Dremel or grinder to make room so the case doesn’t hit the bracket.

Results
As you can see the alternator puts out about 14.5 volts. That’s with the AC and stereo on. I’ve been running this set-up for over a year now without any issues.
