Hole Saw Kit
Every now and then I come across a project that calls for cutting a round hole in wood or plastic. I used to lug a drill and jig saw out. I’d pop a starter hole in the work piece and cut the hole with the jig saw. While this technique worked, the results weren’t always the greatest. Enter the hole saw.
Hole Saw Kit
I had a project that called for some 3″ holes cut into some 1″ x 4″ material. After some searching, I picked up this Tacklife Hole Saw Kit on Amazon for about thirteen bucks. In the past, I’ve used Tacklife woodworking tools and had good results. This hole saw kit came with 12 different sizes of hole saws, accessories and a case.
Using The Holesaw
I assembled the hole saw according to the instruction booklet. I suggest using a wrench to securely tighten the collet nut. To avoid tear out, I sawed halfway through then wood then flipped the piece over to finish the cut. A cordless drill works fine as long as you have a freshly charged battery. If you’re drilling a lot of holes, you’ll be better off using a corded drill.
Results
After some sanding the holes came out pretty nice. As always, hindsight is 20/20. If you have the option, I suggest cutting a hole or two in a scrap piece to get the hang of using the hole saws. After some sanding the holes came out pretty nice. Had I used a jig saw I’d have spent a lot more time sanding and the holes might have not been so aesthetically pleasing.
Final Thoughts
For the money this is a decent hole saw kit. Since I’ll just be using the hole saws for occasional projects this kit suits my needs just fine. If you’re going to be cutting a lot of holes on a daily basis you might want to look at one of these higher end hole saw kits.
Tips and Suggestions
- Select the right saw for the material you’re cutting.
- Secure your work VERY well.
- Keep the saw/drill square to the work piece.
- Start slow and increase drill speed slowly.
