You can buy a cornhole set at local discount stores and online. Sets for backyard use come in lightweight portable models. Tailgaters can find sets themed after their favorite sports team or favorite adult beverage.
DIY Cornhole Set
Building your own cornhole set is a fun DIY project. By building your own you can save money and customization is limited only by your imagination. With a few tools and a little time, you can build a nice cornhole set. For those who want to give building their own set a shot, I found this nice set of free instructions.
Building Tips
If you’re going to build your own cornhole set there are a few things that can make the building process easier and the end product come out better.
- Cutting perfect holes in the boards can be tricky and requires a few different power tools. I found that a hole saw makes cutting the holes quick and easy. This hole saw is economical and works very well with a cordless drill.
- When predrilling screw holes use a countersink tool to set the screw heads flush.
- For a smooth playing surface and a very nice finished look use wood putty to fill in the holes and sand smooth.
Cornhole Board Customizing
For those that want to take their cornhole set to the next level, there are several options for customization. One of my favorites is LED lights. These inexpensive kits keep the party going even after the sun goes down!

The right accessories can make playing cornhole more enjoyable. While playing and conversing It’s easy to forget what the score is. There are a bunch of cornhole scorekeepers available to make keeping score easier. Playing cornhole often goes hand in hand with enjoying beverages.
