Pocket Hole Jigs

Pocket hole screws are great for creating joints in wood. Using a special jig and drill bit, screw holes are drilled at an angle. Self tapping screws are then used to secure the joints. This process hides the hardware making a very strong and sleek looking joint.

Pocket Hole Jigs

Pocket hole joinery has been around for a while now. There are several styles of pocket hole jigs on the market. Some of the most basic are the single hole jigs and block type double hole jigs. In this article we’ll be looking at the fixture type pocket hole jig. These jigs come with quick release clamps allowing for speedier drilling in multiple pieces.

The Massca Pocket Hole Jig is built of heavy duty aluminum. It comes with a heavy duty adjustable quick release clamp for securing the wood and making quick work of drilling several pieces. The drill block is removable and can be used alone. Another nice feature is the removable dust collection connector.

What’s Included

  • Drill Jig
  • Pocket Hole Drill
  • Depth Setting Gage
  • Step Collar
  • Hex Key
  • Selection of Pocket Hole Screws

Cool Features

The body is made of heavy duty aluminum. Some other jigs on the market are made of plastic.

I like the mounting holes in base for mounting the jig to a board and securing it to a bench.

The included dust collector works great. You can remove it if you wish.

Markings are engraved and filled with contrasting paint. This makes the settings easy to see.

Using The Tool

I’d never used a pocket hole drill so this was unfamiliar territory for me. When I placed my piece of wood into the fixture the markings on the base told me what thickness my material was.

Material Width

I removed the work piece and then adjusted the drill block accordingly.

Next, using the depth gauge I set the drill stop on the drill bit.

Now came the fun part. I placed my work piece into the jig and secured it with the clamp. Drilling the holes was easy using the special drill bit and my cordless drill.  The drill bit creates a small pilot hole for the screws.

Pocket Hole

The jig came with a nice selection of pocket hole screws and a driving bit. Assembling the two pieces could not have been easier.

I recommend securing the two pieces with clamps as they can move when driving the screws. Sanding around the pocket holes prior to assembly is also recommended.

Cost Considerations

The Massca Pocket Hole Jig sells for around $79 on Amazon.  Comparable tools are in the $100 to $130 range. However, those jigs are made of plastic. These factors make the Massca jig a good value.

Conclusions

The Massca Pocket Hole Jig makes perfectly clean pocket holes every time. The easy to read markings and depth setting gauge make adjusting for different thicknesses of material quick and easy. For the price, it’s hard to beat this tool. I recommend it to anyone who wants to make strong and clean looking joints. This jig makes a great addition to anyone’s workshop.
