DIY 5 Gallon Bucket Raised Garden

Creating a DIY raised bed garden using a 5-gallon bucket is a practical and affordable way to grow plants in small spaces. This method allows you to customize your garden with minimal effort and materials.

By using a 5-gallon bucket as a raised bed garden, you can enjoy fresh herbs, vegetables, or flowers even in limited outdoor or indoor spaces. This DIY project is perfect for urban dwellers or anyone looking to maximize gardening space efficiently.

Materials Needed:

  • 12 pressure-treated 2x4s (eight feet each)
  • 2 lb boxes of 2.5-inch exterior/deck/stainless steel screws
  • 5-gallon buckets (with drilled drainage holes)

Tools:

Cut List

From the first 6 boards:

  • 6 pieces at 52.5″ (for the long sides of the shelves)
  • 15 pieces at 11.25″ (for the bucket spacers)

From the remaining 6 boards:

    • 4 pieces at 51″ (for the legs of the top shelf)
    • 2 pieces at 48.75″ (for the horizontal supports at the base)
    • 2 pieces at 34″ (for the legs of the middle shelf)
    • 2 pieces at 17″ (for the legs of the bottom shelf)

Step 1: Assemble the Bucket Holders (Shelves)

Each shelf requires:

  • 2 pieces at 52.5″

  • 5 pieces at 11.25″

Instructions:

  1. Place the 52.5″ boards parallel to each other.

  2. Evenly space the 11.25″ cross pieces between them (approximately 11.25″ apart) to create slots for the buckets.

  3. Secure the pieces together using 2.5″ deck screws.

  4. Repeat this process to assemble a total of 3 shelves.

  3. Flip the shelf that will be the middle shelf upside down.
  4. Attach the 34″ legs to the front corners of the middle shelf.
