Showtime Speedway

Each year after a long winter, I look forward to visiting Florida for the warm sun and beaches. Attending local Florida race tracks is also a high priority for me. In this post I’ll share with you my recent visit to Showtime Speedway on April 9th, 2022. Showtime is located in Clearwater Florida.

Track History

Originally called Sunshine Speedway, the track originally opened in 1960 and ran for four decades. The track hosted racing events of all types.

In 2004, the State of Florida purchased the property and the track closed. It was turned into a testing facility for the state’s highway department. Die hard racing fans petitioned politicians in 2008 and the track was soon put up for lease.  In 2012 the track reopened as Showtime Speedway and has been operating ever since.

The Track

Showtime Speedway is currently a 3/8 mile pavement oval. The track also hosts high profile outlaw figure 8 races each year on its figure 8 course.  Drag racing fans enjoy several drag racing events each year on Showtime’s quarter mile drag strip. I’ve never been asked to pay to park.  Adult ticket prices for Saturday night oval racing events are 15 bucks.

Fan Amenities

There’s nothing fancy about Showtime Speedway. You pick a seat and you watch racing. If you wish, you can grab something from the concession stands. There’s one set of restrooms which are adequate. One thing that stands out to me is that there isn’t a bad seat in the house. Fans can easily see all the racing action no matter where they sit. Showtime even offers a cool backstretch tailgating option.

Food and Drinks

Showtime Speedway has a concession stand and a beer stand. In my experience the beer is always cold and reasonably priced. I’ve not been impressed with the typical racetrack food offered at the track. You may want to fill up before you arrive.

Racing

Showtime hosts a variety of classes including street stocks, sprint cars, late models, figure 8 cars, 4 bangers and others. The track is fast and allows for hard two and three wide racing. I’ve made several visits to Showtime Speedways. Some nights they have full fields of cars and other nights not so much. Regardless the car count, the racing action is fast and furious. Some of the feature winners on the night of my visit are shown below.

Recommendation

Showtime offers some great racing for the casual fan and die hard racing fans. The ups and downs of car counts can make visiting local racetracks a crap shoot. I’d suggest visiting Showtime Speedway when they hold one of their larger events. You can check their schedule here.
